What is Big Data?

Big data is the one of the most discussed topic today. Many industries such as Healthcare, Banking, Manufacturing and IT focus on what big data is, why it is important, and the benefits of analyzing it (Su, no date).

More and more data is being generated every day. With the advent of big data and the Internet of Things (IoT), volumes of customer-related data continue to increase. Websites, applications, mobile phones, e-mails, social media, personal assistants, sensors, are the tools most frequently used by companies in order to communicate and collect customer information.

The main characteristics of Big Data are (Rai, 2019):
  • Variety refers to structured, unstructured, and semi-structured data that is collected from multiple sources like emails, photos, audios, and posts.
  • Velocity refers to the speed at which dada is being created in real-time.
  • Volume data that is being collected from different sources like social media platforms, human interactions, networks, business processes.

Big Data is heavily used and is seen as the one of the most important part of predictive analysis. Analytics tools fuelled with Big Data can predict outcomes which help businesses and organizations to make better decisions, derive enhanced insight, optimize operations efficiencies and reduce risks (Guru, no date).

Businesses around the world utilize their digital marketing strategies to increase the customer experience which can help to improve their products and services. Companies can always stay a step ahead of their competitors, what kind of promotions and offers they provide. Big Data insights derived from social media and analytics platforms can help to come up with better offers for customers. Moreover, it allows companies to learn customer behavior to understand the customer trends and provide the experience to them.

Big data is an opportunity for businesses to be more thorough in the way they analyze and understand the world.
